Series 1 (2013-2014) - Shikimi Jr High
During my job as an English-teaching ALT in Nagasaki Japan, I enjoyed
drawing a weekly funny whiteboard image for my junior high school
students. In early 2013 I started my "Word-of-the-Week", and did it
almost every week, pausing for school breaks now and then. I picked a
word that the students most likely hadn't studied yet - usually a funny
or strange word - and drew something to accompany it, often using
pop-culture references. The images started off very simple and basically
just doodles, but I gradually made them more detailed and got new marker
colors to make them more colorful. |

Series 2 (2014-2015) - Mikawa Jr High
After moving to a new Nagasaki junior high, Mikawa, I continued my
word-of-the-week whiteboards, but this time I opted for a vertical
layout. On a trip home to Michigan, I picked up a ton of new whiteboard
marker colors, and my weekly illustrations got more elaborate. I didn't
have quite the same zest for it at this second school, since it was a
much larger, less personal teaching environment, and some of the roudier
kids would mess with my drawings, but some of the kids really enjoyed
it. I went on to teach at one more juniot high after this during my time
as an ALT, but decided to retire the series with my moving on from
Mikawa Jr High. I miss drawing those weekly pictures, and it was
definitely one of my favorite parts of my ALT job! |
