in the story of my eventual descent into sonic
madness... Like Sugarbrain 1, and 3 (with would follow
10 years later), this album consists of all noise /
chaos / experimentation. 50 tracks, all 30 seconds, one

INFO
Though
I'd liked electronic music since childhood, I hadn't
started really getting into house music until late 1999,
shortly before starting this album. I decided I wanted
to make an album with lots of house influence. I didn't
end up making anything that sounded that much like
house, (except for "Drama Suckers"), but what I did make
turned out enjoyable and diverse (in my humble opinion).
This album was a bit of a breakthrough for me. For
starters, it was my first album to have some tracks
recorded in CD-quality (44100 Hz), which I would stick
to afterwards. Thus, a lot of the album sounds much more
crisp than previous albums (except for the first few
tracks I made for it). Also, after a couple albums of
just experimenting with the technique, I started
time-stretching / compressing all of my loops, leading
to a much tighter sound from this album onward.

COVER |
INFO
I
didn't really have a music concept, going into this
album, but I was really inspired by Japanese modern
culture at the time (fresh after coming home from my
second trip to Japan), so I think that effected this
one. This is at times rather danceable, but noisier,
harder-edged, and a bit slower than it's successor, "On
a Mission from Skull". It has a lot of hip hop
breakbeats and distortion.

This is the remix CD of
"Destructo". At the time I made Destructo, I thought it
was my best stuff. But after a little time, I decided I
could do the tracks better/more originally. The remixes
were very fun to do, and I like the album better than
Destructo. There are also two brand new tracks, "VS" and

Ryan Sands.

"THE EXTRA" BONUS EP
|
INFO
I felt that "Destructo" was a lot
more serious and political than I usually do, and I
decided with "The", I'd return to Evil Eye's natural
playfulness, but honing my new experimentation with
loop-based music. It's one of my weirdest and most fun
LPs.
I was still learning how to make "music" at that point
(as opposed to just noise), but I learned a very
important thing while working on "The": How to
time-stretch and compress so that all my loops match up.
That may sound quaint nowadays, but back then it was a
big deal. I only did this on a few tracks on the album
(I didn't start doing it regularly until "On a Mission
from Skull", but this album planted the seeds for my
later musical growth.
A little bit after making "The", I made "The Extra", a
companion EP. Not much to say about it because it's
literally just "The" sped up by 200%. I apparently found
this quite amusing at the time...

COVER |
INFO
This was a landmark album for me.
On Destructo I was playing around with loop-based music
composition a lot, and that eventually became my method
of choice for music making. At the time I made Destructo
was the time I really started feeling serious about
getting my music out there. Now as I look back at it,
it's actually one of my least-remarkable albums, and I
didn't alter the loops enough for it to be that
original, but it was more like a learning process for
what would eventually blossom later. The album had a
much more serious tone than its computer-made
predecessors. It was rather political in spirit, much
like my pre-computer Evil Eye tapes. I guess I was
feeling teen angst!

The title track "Destructo" was the
first song I made for the LP that would come later in
the summer of 1998. Shortly after making that track, I
decided to make a few remixes and ask my best friend to

DISCO FROM HELL |
LP - 1998 |
|

COVER |
INFO
Looking back, this is my favorite
of the pre-loop Evil Eye albums. I was just beginning to
use loops a bit, but the music was still very random in
it's construction. It has a more calm sound than its
computer-made predecessors, at times recalling the tone
of the old Evil Eye tapes, but at the same time plenty
bizarre. "Black Plague" is quite possibly my weirdest
regular Evil Eye song... I was thinking of how William S
Burroughs used to do tape splicing experiments, and did
that with an audio file of my voice, doing a mock blues
croon about the depression that comes with eternal life.
I also used an electric bass and harmonica - two
instruments not usually associated with Evil Eye - for
the song.

INSIDE-FRONT COVER

INFO
This was one incredibly odd Evil
Eye album, and the first to be put into the CD format (I
got a CD burner around that time). "Omake" is a Japanese
word meaning "bonus", and I thought it would be fun to
put some bonuses in this album. (Without the omake, Bug
is about the length of an EP). The omake tracks feature
my kid nephew, Cameron, screaming and laughing and being
a weirdo, and were then slowed down a lot, so they sound
very strange.
One thing I did on this album that I wouldn't do now was
including a couple not-very-good remixes of two of my
then-favorite musicians. I still like to remix, but I
keep it separate from my original tracks. Anyway, that
aside, I love this album.

COVER |
INFO
This is the one that started it
all, sort of. By this time I had already made over 21½
hours of Evil Eye, all on tape, and all by holding my
keyboards in front of a boom-box' microphone. With my
purchasing of a computer I had a whole new world of
musical possibilities before me. This album is my first
steps into that world. The tracks are all short, noisy,
strange, and chockfull of samples that I could get sued
for if I tried to make money off the album. Tracks 4,
13, 15, and 22 are remixes of older Evil Eye songs from
the tape era.

I started making music under the
name "Evil Eye" back in early 1996, two years before I
had a computer. Back then I made tapes, using just one
or two keyboards, and recording into my boom-box's
microphone. I made fourteen 90 minutes albums, and one
mini-cassette album. I only have the covers posted here
because there is not really much to be said about them.
The general sound of these albums is lo-fi and kind of
mellow sounding. They were pretty low-tech, but they
have a special place in my heart.

I messed around with video editing
now and then in 1999 and 2000. Well I still do, but
nowadays I use software. Back then, I hooked up to VHS
recorders together and went to town. In addition to all
sorts of weird experimental stuff (mostly with Ryan), I
also made a couple Evil Eye / Macro things.

I chose for the project were a song, packaging design,

This was my first Evil Eye music
video, and it was a doozy. I didn't exactly have any
video editing equipment available to me, so I just
linked my two VCRs together. It's very sloppy and
strange, but I like it. Meanwhile, it's a litmus test
for my friends as to whether they can handle the
extremes of Evil Eye. Some of the footage (the "Gink"
sequences), were done my Ryan Sands and I.
